Why Intimate Care?
A healthy vagina is inhabited by various types of good bacteria, of which lactobacilli are generally the most abundant. The composition of these bacteria constantly changes due to the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, sexual intercourse, vaginal hygiene, and the use of certain medications (such as contraceptives and antibiotics). 14 502, 15,283
An abundance of lactobacilli is an indication of a healthy vagina. These good bacteria inhibit the overgrowth of infection causing bacteria and fungi by maintaining a pH level of 3.8 – 4.4 (slightly acidic). They are able to do so by producing hydrogen peroxide, lactic acid and antimicrobial peptides.14 502, 15 284
Prebiotics and Vaginal infections
Prebiotics provide energy to and promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria. 14, 503 Lactobacilli grow more effectively in the presence of prebiotics, and therefore assist by suppressing the growth of pathogens and preventing infections. 14, 505
Vaginal infections usually occur when the balance of the good bacteria is disturbed, and there is overgrowth of other infection-causing bacteria or yeasts, causing bacterial vaginosis or thrush. This could happen when the acidity (pH) of the vagina is disturbed, when tight, non-absorbent clothing traps moisture and encourages growth of the infection-causing germs, or when there is physical damage or irritation of the vagina. 16
As infections may require different treatment, it is important to consult your healthcare professional for the right treatment: ask them about the BETADINE® solution that may be suitable for your infection.
