Why is washing with normal soap and water not enough?

At the same time, frequent use of soap or liquid cleansers can strip our skin of its outer layers52 and natural oils, leading to moisture loss that causes skin dryness and irritation.53

Maintaining the skin’s pH balance is important in fostering good skin health. The skin’s protective barrier (acid mantle) needs to be at pH levels 4.0 to 6.0 to inhibit germ growth and maintain an optimal environment for skin friendly flora to live.54 Prolonged use of alkaline cleansers and soaps can disrupt the skin’s delicate pH balance, causing it to lose its anti-germ abilities and may allow harmful bacteria and allergens to enter the skin to cause swelling, redness, dryness and discomfort.52
