Symptoms

The unpleasant odour caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV) is just one of its symptoms. A BV infection can also cause a change in normal vaginal discharge; normal discharge is generally thin and clear or white, whilst a BV infection may result in excessive discharge, which is typically thin, milky and sticky.40D BV sufferers may also experience occasional itching or irritation either inside or around the vagina and in some instances BV may cause a burning sensation during urination.42B

BV should not be confused with a yeast infection (candidiasis/thrush), which is caused by a fungus. The symptoms of thrush include a thick, white dishcharge together with itching and burning. 45, 46, 50

Risk factors

While the odour caused by bacterial vaginosis (BV) can make many women feel self-conscious about their scent, there are more pressing reasons to prevent recurrent BV infection. Although BV is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), women with BV have a higher risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and HIV.39, 43B
Other risk factors include:
  • Multiple male or female sexual partners
  • Having a new sex partner
  • Not using a condom during sex
  • Cigarette smoking Intra-uterine Devices (IUD)
  • A disruption in the microbial balance between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in the vagina causing an increase in the vaginal pH, including through vaginal douching. 39E, 42C, 48 Risk factors that can also increase the acidity of the vagina include the use of certain vaginal products, antiseptic solutions, bubble bath, soap and the presence of semen in the vagina.39F
Consistent condom use can decrease the risk of BV. 39G
Risk factors if left untreated

If left untreated, BV can also cause pregnant women to be more prone to miscarriage or premature delivery. 43B

Treatment

BETADINETM BV Gel is a new, clinically-proven, water-based vaginal gel that is non-antibiotic and antimicrobial. It has been proven to treat BV and prevent recurring infections. BETADINETM BV Gel works by creating a physical barrier in the vaginal environment, which prevents “bad” bacteria, that cause BV, from adhering to the walls of the vagina without obstructing the growth of “good” bacteria. This allows the “good” bacteria to flourish and restores balance in the vaginal environment, resulting in rapid relief from BV odour within at least 24 hours of starting treatment.49
